Improving your Ukulele Playing – Part I

Improving your Ukulele Playing – Part I

You have started your ukulele beginner lessons and have learned the basics. Now you want to make sure that you are improving your playing. This should happen automatically over time, but sometimes, it doesn’t for some people. There is no need to be discouraged because there are ways to ensure that your ukulele playing improves. If you don’t see much improvement over a long period of time, then you could take a few of the following tips into consideration and see whether they help you. If you are more interested in knowing how to enhance your lessons and get the most out of them, check out http://guitarlessonssingapore.com/tips-to-enhance-your-ukulele-lessons-part-1-of-2/.

Play with a group

This is not to say that playing at home by yourself will not produce results, but when you play in a group regularly, you gain certain advantages. You will be able to observe how the others play and you will strive to keep up to their level. In case of any mistakes, you can discuss and get it sorted the first time it even happens. This prevents you from developing bad habits. You can learn from the experiences of others and contribute to their learning as well. And the best part of this is that playing in a group is great fun!

Play to someone

If you have the facility, have someone who understands the ukulele hear you play on a regular basis. It is best if you can have your teacher do this, but if this is not possible, then you can always make a reciprocal arrangement with one of the ukulele players you know. By doing this, you can have your small mistakes pointed out to you that you yourself might not be able to catch. It is very hard to point out your own mistakes, no matter how slow you are playing and how alert you are. By playing to someone, you can realize what mistakes you make and focus on improvement.

Listen to ukulele music

Listen to a lot of music where the ukulele is the main instrument. You will gradually develop a sense of what is right and where mistakes are being made as you play. The more you listen to good music by professional musicians, the more you will develop this understanding. This is how you learn to play by the ear, which is a great quality for ukulele players, and indeed, all musicians to have. Without learning how to play by the ear, it is difficult to improve your ukulele playing because your sense of music still needs to be developed.

Practice, and then practice some more

Just like everything else, the ukulele requires a lot of practice for the player to improve. Without regular and consistent practice outside of ukulele lessons, this improvement will never happen. When it comes to practice, it is more useful to pinpoint and focus on your weak points than continuing to play what you already know perfectly well again and again. Practice playing full songs and always incorporate something new every once in a while so that you don’t get bored or frustrated with your practice sessions. Ideally, it is good to practice for a couple of hours every day but if this is not possible, then draw up a schedule for your practice to which you can stick.

Caring for your Cello – Cleaning

Caring for your Cello – Cleaning

When you have an instrument as beautiful as the cello, you need to care for it faithfully. Cello care must be regular and consistent if you want to keep your instrument looking beautiful, clean and in great shape. Cellos that are maintained well give better and longer service and less trouble in the long run, thus saving you time and money on repairs. Once you have bought a cello (for information on this, refer to: http://cellolessonssingapore.com/how-to-buy-a-cello/), you need to keep it in good shape.

Using the Cello

The instrument must be used regularly or it will no longer function properly. Even if you are extremely busy, the art of cello playing requires that you practice regularly. This also keeps the instrument in working order and prevents it from developing tuning and other problems. If your cello has been lying around for years, it would be kinder to sell it or give it away to someone who would be playing it. Alternatively, you can encourage your partner, children or friends to play even if you no longer do so.

Cleaning the Cello

The body

The cello must be dusted before and after every time you take it out to play. If you don’t take it out on a regular basis, then dust it once a week. Regular cleaning of the instrument will prevent the rosin dust used for the bow from accumulating on the fingerboard and the strings. Use a soft wet cloth to wipe the dust and the oil off the cello and then use a soft dry cloth to wipe it fully dry. If you feel that the dirt hasn’t gone with this, use some cello polish and rub it into the wooden surfaces of the instrument.

The strings

Keeping the strings clean is important to keep its high quality of vibration and tone. It is sufficient to clean them once a month in order to keep them in good working condition. Put the cello in a standing position. Take a soft cloth and put a few drops of alcohol on it and then wipe the strings carefully. The alcohol will dissolve any accumulations of rosin or dust on the strings. You must be careful not to let the alcohol drip on the body of the cello as it can damage the varnish irreparably. Hence, you place the instrument in an upright position before cleaning.

The bow

The bow needs to be cleaned just like the rest of the instrument. When it comes to the bow, you have to treat it carefully as it is one of the most delicate parts of the instrument. One of the first things that your cello teacher will tell you is that the bow is where you apply rosin in order to make it sticky and get a grip on the strings in order to produce good sound. It is not a good idea to use too much rosin, though, as it can lead to too much stickiness. The problem here is that the sticky rosin can attract all kinds of dirt to accumulate on the bow. So it is a good idea to clean the bow after each session of playing. Use a soft cloth to wipe the rosin off the bow after every use. If necessary, you can first wipe with a soft damp cloth and then wipe it dry with a soft dry cloth.

The Advantages of Teaching Cello Lessons to Adult Beginners

The Advantages of Teaching Cello Lessons to Adult Beginners

Nowadays, more and more adults are enlisting themselves in music classes. Not for mastery or for a refresher course. Most of them have zero knowledge when it comes to their preferred musical instrument. The demand for music teachers teaching cello lessons to adult beginners is now on the rise.

However, some music teachers are still quite hesitant to take on this challenge. Some may feel intimidated with their adult students who may be more mature in terms of age and experience. Some think that adult beginners may not take their cello lessons seriously. They may just brush it off as a mere hobby to pass the time. Other teachers think that adults may have the tendency to give up on a whim. Others may just be too busy to dedicate time and effort for practice, or even show up for lessons. These reasons are somewhat valid and possible. Yet if you think about it, all these could happen to younger students too, but on a different level or circumstance.

Still not convinced? Here are advantages that could win you over and give cello lessons to adult beginners a shot:

  1. The power to decide. Adult students enroll because they want to. They practice and perform not out of parental pressure, but out of passion to learn and play. Their efforts stem from personal choice which brings happiness and makes the learning process more enjoyable.

  1. The satisfaction of playing for fun. Why be so serious?   Adults are motivated to learn to play the cello because they know they’ll have a ball while they’re at it. As a teacher, integrating elements of fun is one of the more effective methods in teaching cello lessons. Singapore students are sometimes given a few minutes to engage in play and games prior to the lessons. If a student is having fun, you’ll be amazed at how he becomes more receptive and focused, and on how much of the lessons he has absorbed.

  1. The need for brain development. Brain development exercises should not stop in adulthood. In fact, it is a time when adults need it all the more. Taking cello classes could stimulate brain functions because motor, mental, and sensory functions all come into play. In addition, an adult’s stressful life makes one prone to encounter bouts of anxiety, insecurity, loneliness, and depression. Music could be their saving grace. As a teacher, you become instrumental in enhancing and maintaining an adult learner’s mental health and wellness.

  1. The ability of communication and self-awareness. Adults are more mature in verbalizing their thoughts and feelings. They willingly ask more questions and work around situations they have difficulty in. Adults are more aware when they’re making mistakes and are mature enough to adjust and handle criticism.

Learning is not bound by age. Hence, more adults are pursuing their passions and chasing their dreams. And yes, they are in pursuit of teachers of cello lessons. Let them find you.

Caring for Your Classical Guitar – Humidification

When you have something as delicate and valuable as a classical guitar, you need to take good care of it. If you are just taking beginner classical guitar lessons, then one of the basic things you need to learn right from the beginning is how to take care of your guitar. It is good to form these good habits right from the beginning so there is no hardship involved later in keeping your instrument safe and working long. If you are interested in knowing more about the classical guitar as an instrument, you can read up at: http://guitarlessonssingapore.com/classical-guitar-lessons-getting-know-classical-guitar/.

One of the most important things to discuss when taking basic guitar lessons is how the climate affects your classical guitar. It is important for the guitar to be exposed to  a decent humidity level. Humidification is a significant factor in keeping your guitar in good condition. Without the proper humidity level, the guitar can really get damaged badly.

Dry weather can shrink your guitar. Once the wood shrinks, every part of the guitar feels the pressure. This ultimately leads to cracking, which destroys the guitar. On the other hand, there is also the fact that very high moisture content in the air can make the guitar sound bad since the tone would lack volume and projection. The wood in the guitar expands due to the moisture, which leads to bloating. Once again, this can put pressure on the guitar, damaging it.

So we see how important it is to keep the classical guitar within the acceptable humidity limits. This is around 40 – 55%. Anything higher or lower than this can damage the guitar, especially if it is kept under such conditions for a long period of time. There are ways to ensure that your guitar is kept in good humid condition to ensure its longevity.

  • The first step is to ensure that you have a decent guitar case. Always store your guitar in its case to protect it from the elements. Whenever you are not actually playing your guitar, it should be in its case. It is very easy for musical instruments to get damaged if they are left standing by as a decoration as people are apt to do. So forget the décor and go with the case.
  • Keep a humidifier in your guitar case. This will ensure that there is the desired level of moisture in the air, without resorting to major changes. The humidifier will keep the guitar at the optimum level of moisture.
  • Another option is to keep a hygrometer in your guitar case. This helps in measuring the moisture content of the air, which in turn, helps you make decisions on how far to go with the humidifying.
  • Keep an eye out for any change in the way your guitar sounds. Chances are that these may be caused by weather conditions. A simple storage period in its case will ensure that the guitar goes back to normal.

While humidifying, one thing you need to avoid is to actually humidify the guitar itself. Some people prefer to put a humidifying device or wet sponge inside the guitar, but this can lead to overexposure to moisture. The moisture needs to be evenly distributed, so the best way is to humidify the guitar case and ensure that the guitar is in its case most of the time.

With just a bit of effort, you can ensure that your guitar doesn’t get affected by extreme weather conditions.

Purchasing Bass Guitars on a Budget

Bass guitarists are often in demand in bands and are sought after because fewer people opt for learning this instrument. It is a wonderful instrument that allows the player to play deep notes and be the power force in the band. The bass guitarist has a great job and the few new beginners who understand this are at a great advantage. But bass guitars don’t always come cheap. Here are a few tips to ensure that you know how to obtain a good quality bass guitar at a reasonable price.

It doesn’t need to be the best

One thing you really need to remember is that purchasing a beginner’s guitar means you can afford to skimp on quality. While you have to make sure that your guitar is of a certain decent quality, it doesn’t have to be top-notch with everything you require. A beginner taking bass guitar lessons will invariably never be able to get the full use of a high end bass guitar anyway. So the best idea is to ensure that you choose a quality that provides good service but at the same time, need not be excellent.

Buy used

One easy way to obtain a good bass guitar at a reasonable rate is to buy a used instrument. There are people willing to let go of their great instruments, usually because they have upgraded, at a nominal rate, if they are convinced you would take good care of their baby. There are also some great deals to be made on used instrument stores and websites. Many of these instruments are in good shape. But you have to be careful because there are some duds in the market as well. Play and get acquainted with the used instrument before you buy.

Try out unbranded guitars

You don’t always have to buy the best branded guitars. If you can afford to do so, great! But there is no need to worry if you can’t. There are some excellent unbranded bass guitars in the market. You have to keep in mind that there is no guarantee for these guitars. But if you hear from anyone that a specific shop sells good guitars that don’t fall under a renowned brand name, you can try it out. Always keep in mind that these are only a temporary measure, unless, of course, your unbranded version offers you excellent value.

Check out off-brand guitars

Another option when choosing cheap bass guitars is to opt for a model that is actually from a good brand but never became popular. These models eventually come down in price and are a good choice for any budding guitarist. Of course, there are reasons why these models didn’t attain popularity in the first place, but these might not always be connected to actual quality issues. So test out such guitars and make a purchase if you feel the instrument is good enough.

Choose faded or worn guitars

Faded or worn guitars are models that are brought out in order to bring down the cost of the guitar. These models often don’t have a perfect finish, but the quality is still pretty good. So basically, they might not always look great, but they will still sound great! Similarly, you can also bring down the price of the purchase of your bass guitar by choosing guitars with small imperfections such as minor scratches or dents.

Once you have purchased your guitar, you can check out this article for tips on maintaining it properly: http://guitarlessonssingapore.com/bass-guitar-maintenance/. For further information on basic bass guitar lessons, please refer to: www.guitarlessonssingapore.com.

Teaching Keyboard Lessons: Setting Up Keyboard Classes

Are you a professional keyboard player and want to pass on your knowledge to the new generation? As a teacher, knowledge and skills are the two most important factors before you start your own classes. As you might know, not all great keyboard players can be great teachers as well. One should be able to build a rapport with students and understand their concerns to be a good teacher. If you are intent on starting your own classes, take a look at some of the factors that you will need to consider. Most of them are basic and you will need to consider them before you are ready.

Space and Infrastructure

Think about how many students you would be able to accommodate at one point of time. Are you more comfortable giving private lessons or group lessons? If you are giving private lessons to students, you might be able to teach at the student’s place of residence. But if you have a group of students, you might have to arrange for a suitable place for them to learn. If you are just starting out and cannot finance renting a room for your classes, you need to do the next best thing. Ask your friends or colleagues if they have an empty garage or shed that you can use, or you can put your home into use. But make sure your neighbors, family, and friends will not be disturbed.

Lessons

You need to prepare a structured lesson plan for beginners and advanced students separately. You need to put in a lot of efforts to prepare your keyboard lessons. Lessons that are done on the spur of the moment are messy and confusing. They will not adhere to a pattern and leave the student confused. Keep in mind that beginners will need a different sort of approach while advanced students require a different approach. Make sure you plan for both and are ready for this before your class starts.

Fees

Ask around in your neighborhood and location to know what the approximate cost is for keyboard lessons. If you are starting out new, you can offer low rates for a while. But once you establish yourself as a good and qualified teacher, charge the standard rates. Do not over-charge as it may lead to unpopularity. As your experience increases in teaching, you can start charging more as students would also be willing to pay more for a more experienced and skilled teacher.

Networking

Try to attend local music workshops, connect with schools and colleges in your locality to increase your visibility. You can also teach at schools and other institutions where you would get the proper infrastructure to teach as well. You will be able to meet students and parents and make a name for yourself. Later, if you want to start classes outside, you will have a crowd of students already.

As mentioned above, to truly excel at the keyboard, or any instrument, you need to take care of it so that it can have a longer life. If you are a beginner and do not own a keyboard yet and are looking for tips on how to buy a keyboard, check out this link: http://keyboardlessonssingapore.com/how-to-buy-a-musical-keyboard/.  For more on musical keyboards, you can refer to www.keyboardlessonssingapore.com/.

Questions To Ask Your Cello Teacher

When you enroll your child for Cello lessons, you would expect results. But there are many teachers who are satisfied with teaching your child a few basic notes and a song. You need to steer clear of these teachers or academies that do not support your child and encourage them to grow. If you do not think that your child is progressing, then you need to talk to the teacher and find a solution for this. If the teacher is not very helpful over this, then it is a clear indication that you need to change classes. Below are a few things you should ask a cello teacher before hiring them.

Professional experience

You will find many teachers who have impressive degrees but their skills are not quite up to the mark. So, more than degrees and educational qualifications, try to concentrate on their professional experience and see how they do. Try to figure out if they can bring out the hidden talent in your child. People who have professional experience would have made mistakes in their past while learning and they would stop their students from making the same mistakes. They also will have a lot of practical knowledge and be able to pass on non-musical values as well.

Teaching experience

Not all great cello players are great teachers. Teaching requires certain patience and the ability to bond with the student. Not everyone is able to achieve this. Those who do achieve this become really good teachers. So, asking about their teaching experience can reveal a lot for you. Also, ask if you can view a demo class or observe them during their teaching hours.

Style of teaching

This is something that you need to observe and learn first-hand rather than just asking about. Find out if he/she is fun-going, appreciates the hard work put in by the student, correct mistakes properly, etc. Students would be always more comfortable with a teacher who is fun and makes the cello lessons enjoyable. They would be able to communicate better, learn more and thus, progress faster.

Goals and plan structure

Have a proper pre-planned lesson structure which you can show the parents of children or the prospective students who visit you. This is one of the main questions you will be asked. So, it is always better that you are prepared, in which case you can answer with confidence which will also help in impressing the students and their parents. Along with the lesson plan structure, also create short and long term goals for your students. Keep in mind that beginners might need different goals and more advanced students will need to go by different goals. Remember that speed of progress differs from person to person so you need to give time for that as well.

Make sure you exude confidence and try to build a rapport with the student at their first meeting with you. This can stabilize the student-teacher relationship and help you both move forward smoothly.

Now that you know some of the main factors that you need to consider before hiring a cello teacher for your kid’s cello lessons, get started immediately. To know how to improve you cello skill, check out this link: http://cellolessonssingapore.com/how-to-improve-your-cello-skills/. For more on cello, you can refer to www.cellolessonssingapore.com/.

Challenges Flute Players Face – Part I

Challenges Flute Players Face – Part I

While watching an expert playing the flute, it might appear effortless and easy on the surface. But while the flute is a gorgeous instrument that lends itself to all kinds of music, it is not always easy to master. In fact, beginners will take quite a while to get the knack of blowing so that actual music is produce, and not just sounds. Apart from the physical challenges, there are also other practical challenges to be faced when learning the flute. For more generic information about flutes, check out http://flutelessonssingapore.com/. In this article, we shall see what kind of challenges flute players face and how to overcome them.

Posture problems

While experts have long been trying to find a decent posture that doesn’t lead to major muscle problems later, flutists have been regularly diagnosed with musculoskeletal problems. The main problems are in the neck, shoulders and upper back, which can be caused when you hold the arms up. Even if you hold your arms lower, your neck can be compromised. Fingers and wrists are also problematic, leading to injuries. If you develop any of these physical problems, you might have trouble continuing to play the flute. These problems can also become chronic if you overlook them and become a major source of physical fatigue and pain over time.

Though there is no singular rule to deal with ergonomic issues arising from flute playing, you can learn how to prevent such things. Always, consult a good and experienced flute teacher or even an older player and ask them for help in developing your posture. Learn to relax your muscles while playing the flute in order to avoid muscle fatigue. This needs a good amount of practice, but it is well worth the results.

Breathing problems

Beginners to the flute face another major challenge in being unable to keep up with the playing because they haven’t mastered the breathing techniques. Learning how to breathe properly to enable you to play the flute is very basic to the very concept of flute playing. If you fail to learn how to breathe, you will be unable to sustain the notes for a long time. In the long run, it can even cause respiratory trouble and dizziness. Flutes and other wind instruments really need the most air, and for this, you need to develop proper breathing techniques. Most flutists encounter problems when they begin to learn flute notes that are longer and play long phrases of music without knowing how to ration their breathing. Sometimes, flutists even get very conscious about their breathing and gulp in air to last them through the phrase, but it doesn’t work well like this.

Developing good breathing habits overall can go a long way in reducing any breathing problems you can develop while playing the flute. Learn some deep breathing techniques and practice them every day until it comes naturally to you. The important thing is to ensure that you are not consistently left short of breath when playing the flute. Moreover, it is significant that you learn to assess accurately how to work on your breathing depending on the length of the piece you are playing. It is only with practice and the help of a good teacher that you will be able to overcome this hurdle.

Tips for Purchasing an Acoustic Guitar

Tips for Purchasing an Acoustic Guitar

When starting out, most people prefer to buy an acoustic guitar. It is the guitar most recommended for guitar lessons for beginners as it helps you easily discern the sounds and notes, in comparison with other types of guitars. However, acoustic guitars come in many shapes and sizes, materials, and price ranges. It can get quite confusing for someone who doesn’t know where to start. It’s a good idea to get some basic knowledge before making a purchase as you’ll be using the instrument for quite a while. If you need more persuasion to choose an acoustic guitar, check out this article: http://guitarlessonssingapore.com/why-learn-to-play-the-acoustic-guitar/.

Test the guitar

Selecting an acoustic guitar is a serious business. There are so many choices available that you really need to try out quite a few before settling on something that you find suitable. If you don’t have the experience, take along an experienced friend or even your guitar teacher along when you go to purchase your instrument. It has become normal for many people to buy guitars online, but considering how much you are spending, it is always better to go to the shop and try out the instruments yourself. Play a few notes yourself and check whether the resonance is good. You can also ask someone to play the guitar in your presence so you can check whether the projection is good as well. If it doesn’t feel right to you, then it’s not the right guitar for you.

Check out the body style

Each guitar model is slightly different from the other, even if they are the same type of guitar. So there are literally hundreds of choices when you go to purchase an acoustic guitar. The build of the guitar does have a slight effect on the sound it produces but that is not the sole reason why you should keep an eye out for the body style. Each person’s physical make-up is different and a particular guitar might not feel comfortable for everyone. So trying out the guitar to make sure you are able to play on it comfortably is extremely important. If you buy a guitar that is uncomfortable, you will soon develop problems in your posture and muscular pains and aches. To avoid this, choose a guitar that fits your body and your arm without putting too much pressure on your body. You can try out simple guitar lessons as a test.

Price does matter

Acoustic guitars can differ vastly in prices depending on the model and brand you choose. It is best to go for a decent and well-known brand so that you know what to expect from the instrument. Moreover, it is much easier to get such instruments tuned or repaired if the occasion arises. The first thing you must do is set a budget for your guitar purchase. For a beginner guitar, you need not spend a lot of money, but it should still be enough to get you a decent model. Remember that you cannot learn to play well on a second-grade instrument. For more advanced players, there are a large number of options that you can consider, especially if money is no object. In the matter of guitars, you get what you pay for. So be prepared to research all the different models available in your budget range.

Basic Pop Singing Lessons

Basic Pop Singing Lessons

Pop singing is more popular than other styles of singing. This is because most people want to be able to sing like their favorite stars or copy what they hear regularly on the radio. There is also a misconception that pop is easy. Learning pop vocals is probably easier than something like opera singing or Broadway singing, but it is in no way ‘easy’. Pop singing, like any other singing technique needs a lot of hard work, good coaching and practice. For more information on singing lessons in Singapore, check out the site: http://singinglessonssingapore.com/.

Breathing techniques

Proper pop vocal training should include breathing lessons. Of course, everyone knows how to breathe. We have all been doing so since we were babies without having to be taught. But there are breathing exercises and techniques that help in strengthening your vocal cords, your diaphragm and your lungs, thus enabling you to develop a powerful voice required for singing in different pitches.Make sure that your basic singing lessons include these techniques as they are essential for your voice training.

Voice exercises

Each voice is different, and the fact remains that some people pick up faster than others. Voice exercises are important to get you on your way to understanding the art of singing. To become a good singer, you and your coach both need to understand your voice. For this, you will need to learn how to make basic sounds. Of course, you probably want to get to singing songs right away, but you can’t run before you learn to walk.

Correct posture

Getting the posture right is very important for singers. When you sing, you use many of your muscles and organs to get the sounds across properly. With the right posture, you can develop a powerful singing voice. Standing up with your body relaxed, your neck loose and your head up is the right posture for which to aim. Don’t keep your muscles or limbs stiff. If you have physical disabilities that doesn’t allow you to achieve this posture, you can still become a good singer through finding a posture that is suitable for you.

Ear training

Ear training is essential to any musician. Without developing an ear for the music, you cannot keep track of the notes and the pitch of your voice when you try to sing. The idea is to sing the right note at the right time in order to keep time with the song. There is no easy way to do this. You just have to listen to a lot of music, do a lot of singing and work hard on checking where you went wrong and then correcting it. The last part is where a voice coach can be of immense help.

Sight reading

Sight reading is essential for singers even though you might not always want to use the skill. But when you want to try out a new piece or go for an audition for a gig or a job, you might be glad you have learned to sight read music. Sight reading, in short, is the ability to read music. It’s a completely new language but you will have to learn it in order to be a singer. The trick to doing it right is to read large chunks of music while singing instead of individual notes, which can put you off time. Make sure your pop vocal lessons include this important aspect.
