Ukulele Lessons: Ukulele Maintenance
The ukulele is an instrument which needs lots of care and love! The better you maintain your ukulele, the better it will perform for you. If you are a novice, keep these tips in mind.
Play it regularly
Play the ukulele regularly as it is an instrument which sounds better as you play it more and more. Keep playing even if you are not taking ukulele lessons. Do not keep your instrument inside to gather dust. It will clot up and will give off muffled sound instead of clear melody.
Clean it often
This is an obvious but often overlooked point. Clean your instrument regularly. There is no need to use cleaning detergents or products. Dampen a soft cloth with warm water and give the instrument a quick clean. This helps in preventing your sweat and dust hanging up your uke. Avoid cleaning with paper towels as that can scratch the wood and ruin the beautiful finish. It is advised that you do not use furniture polish on your instrument.
Get a bag or case for it
It is always better to get a bag or a hard case for your instrument. It not only gives protection from a potential fall but also from dust gathering. Do not leave your ukulele in direct sunlight or anywhere near a heater. Cold is not as harmful as heat for the uke.
Travelling safe
If you are planning to travel, it is highly advised you get a case for it. If you’re traveling by car, it is better if you keep it inside the car rather than in the boot. If you are flying, you can check-in your uke. You can also securely wrap the ukulele in bubble wrap. This offers extra protection against the rough handling by the airport authorities.
Keep it away from extreme temperatures
Extreme temperatures can cause drastic problems for your ukulele. Heat can cause cracks and the glues keeping the joints together can come apart. This kind of damages is not covered under the warranty. It will be expensive to fix it. It is better in the long run that you protect your instrument from extreme temperature by taking a few simple precautions.
Extreme conditions can cause bad changes as we already discussed. To prevent it, you can keep a humidifier in the case with your uke. Note that humidifiers need to be maintained properly.
Change strings routinely
The strings should ideally be changed every 4-6 months. If it is regularly played, it is advised to change the strings sooner. It is always better to replace the whole set of strings rather than that one string which is ruined. Changing just a single string can cause an imbalance in the sound effect.
Adjust tuners
Don’t forget to adjust the friction tuners at regular intervals of time. The screws loosen when environment condition changes. Keep this in mind and tighten accordingly. Ideally, adjust or change them every 4-6 months.
Maintain personal cleanliness
Wash your hands before handling the instrument, Human sweat and skin oil mixed with the dust make for a very bad ukulele condition. This leads to inferior sound quality. This simple rule can help you save much on the repair expenses later on. These are the main rules you will learn in your ukulele lessons for beginners.
